This is NOT a wish list asking for donations. Rather, this is a list of items found useful by technology people that work with elementary schools. So, if you are a technology person, these are items you may want to add to your wish list.

- Basic Technology Needs
- velcro wire ties
- various Philips screwdrivers (standard size to extremely small)
- very small (but not too small) flathead screwdriver
- spare computer clock batteries (usually 3.6 volt, sometimes 4.5 volt)
- 6-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable (great for target disk mode)
- Easy access to a phone from any computer in the school (a cordless phone if necessary). Any time you call tech support, the representative will want you to be at the computer in question.
- Electricity: clean, adequate electrical source
- inventory of all hardware (Your school can optionally use this downloadable database.)
- inventory of all software (see a template: AppleWorks or PDF)
- utility software (such as MacJanitor, DiskWarrior, Tech Tool Pro, etc)
- Routine backup of all data (documents you don't want to lose), including off-site backup. This can be done with software and services such as bru, SuperDuper, and Mozy.
- backups of all installation disks (can create disk images using Disk Utility, commonly stored in Installers folder on server)
- Routine maintenance plan for important workstations and the server (see recommendations at the O'Reilly Mac Dev Center or Mac Attorney)
- A free AIM account (for occasional use communicating with other techies in diocese)
- membership to the CEM "educational technology" mailing list (call 320-252-1021 to enlist)
- a representative at the occasional diocesan-wide educational technology group meetings
- Encourage teachers, principals, and volunteers to attend computer classes.
- Network Wish List
- accurate documentation of the school's network
- a network closet (well ventilated and possibly temperature controlled) for major network equipment
- within the network closet, 4-post rack
- Category 5 ethernet cables connecting all computers within building. (New cables should be Category 5e or better. Installation must be performed by licensed/certified low-voltage electricians.)
- spare Category 5e Ethernet cables
- 100 Mbps network switches with a couple 1000 Mbps (gigabit) ports
- network laser printer that supports TCP/IP and Bonjour (formerly Rendezvous)
- a high-speed Internet connection protected by a firewall
- internet content filtering system (included with Mac OS 10.5)
- a server with at least two hard drives, a Gigabit network card, a video card, Mac OS Server 10.3 or later (such as XServe)
- a VGA monitor for use with server (an older, free unit is fine)
- a keyboard/mouse for use with server (only occasionally used)
- UPS protection for network switches, firewall, and server

- digital video camera
- scanner
- at least one machine with internal CD/DVD burner (commonly called SuperDrive)
- on at least an occasional basis, attend professional seminars such as
- TIES Education Technology conference
- ATSE (Apple Technology Seminars for Education)
- NECC (National Educational Computing Conference)
- Planning Tips
- Discuss you plans with multiple groups of people.
- Be prepared for the demise of Classic Mode.
