NetRestore: Initial Server Setup

Start NetBoot Service

  1. Launch Server Admin. This program is probably in the Servers folder within Applications. It not already installed, please do so using the Admin Tools CD that came with your server software.
  2. You will be prompted to log into the server. This involves the server's domain name (eg: server.myschool.org), an administrative username for your server, and associated password.

  3. In the left column (the list of services), select NetBoot.
  4. Click the Settings button near the bottom of the window.
  5. Enable Built-in Ethernet (if multiple listings, choose the one the server is physically utilizing).
  6. Click Save.

  7. Click the Start Service button in the toolbar.
  8. Click OK if it says a related service is not running.
    At least one related service is not running.
  9. Quit Server Admin.
  10. Restart the server.

Create images Share Point for use with NetRestore

  1. Log into the server as an administrator. (This can be done either by sitting at the server or using Apple Remote Desktop.)
  2. On one of the hard drives, create a new folder titled images.
  3. Launch Workgroup Manager. This program is probably in the Servers folder within Applications. If not already installed, please do so using the Admin Tools CD that came with your server software.
  4. You will be prompted to log into the server. This involves the server's domain name (eg: server.myschool.org), an administrative username for your server, and associated password.

  5. Click the Sharing icon in the toolbar.
  6. Click the All tab (above the left columns).
  7. Within the left columns, locate and SELECT the images folder you just created.
  8. Place a check-mark next to Share this item and its contents.
  9. Enable Read & Write access for the owner.
  10. Set the group name to admin.
  11. Enable Read & Write access for the group.
  12. Enable Read Only access for everyone.
  13. Click Save.

  14. Click the Protocols tab.
  15. Select the option Inherit permissions from parent.
  16. Click Save.

  17. Select Windows File Settings from the pop-up menu (immediately below the Protocols tab).
  18. Since this share point does not apply to computers that need the Microsoft Windows file sharing protocol, deselect all checkboxes on the screen.
  19. Click Save.

  20. Select FTP Settings from the pop-up menu (immediately below the Protocols tab).
  21. Since this share point does not apply to computers that need the FTP sharing protocol, deselect all checkboxes on the screen.
  22. Click Save.

  23. Quit Workgroup Manager.

The server is now ready. Proceed to the next procedure, creating a NetInstall Set.
