Buying a Printer
This page assumes a printer has already been purchased. If not, please read the technology leader wish list.
Warning
Out of habit, most people install printer drivers/descriptions on a computer when unpacking a new printer. That habit can sometimes install OLD unusable software on the computer. With Mac OS X, the software is usually pre-installed (and probably newer than the CD). If software installation is required, please download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's web site.
Configuring the Printer
Once the printer is unpacked and running, modify the printer's name and possibly TCP/IP settings. These instructions are modeled after the ever-popular HP LaserJet printers. The concepts apply to all network printers.
- Verify that both the printer and a computer are connected to the network.
- Launch Safari.
- Select "Show All Bookmarks" from the "Bookmarks" menu.
- In the left column, click "Bonjour" (formerly Rendezvous).
- In the list of bookmarks, double-click your printer.
- Click the "Networking" tab.
- Click the "AppleTalk" tab.
- Enter an "AppleTalk" name. This will be the printer's name. Use something obvious such as its location (ie: Computer Room or Faculty Lounge).
- Click "Apply".
- Click "OK".
- Click the "TCP/IP" tab.
- If intending to use a static IP address, select "Manual", enter the IP address, the network's subnet mask, and the network's gateway/router.
- Enter "System Contact" information, possibly including the technology leader's name and the school's phone number.
- Enter "System Location" information, possibly including the school's name and which room.
- Click "Apply".
- Click "OK".
- At this point, your connection to the printer may be lost. Wait a few seconds, and if necessary, repeat steps three through six.
- In the left column, click "Other Settings."
- Enter a "mDNS Service Name. This again is the printer's name. This is the name used by Bonjour (formerly Rendezvous).
- Click "Apply."
