Art from the Asmat Rainforest
The Asmat are a people who inhabit an isolated rainforest in West Papua, on the world’s second largest island, Papua New Guinea. A collection of 20 artifacts has been put together, which represent a range of traditional, ceremonial, and daily use objects produced by these master carvers. A stone-age culture until the middle of the 20th century, the Asmat have struggled to maintain their identity and traditions in the face of an encroaching 21st century world. A unique relationship between the Asmat, our own Crosier Fathers and Brothers, and the American Museum of Asmat Art makes this exhibit available to your school. Curricular connections include Oceanic cultures and geography, art projects, rainforest studies, and reflections of physical environment and outside influence in daily life and culture.
