Learn more about life in Southern Sudan. Sudan is one country in Africa. Can you find Sudan on a map of Africa? The people of one area of Sudan are called the Toposa. Let us take a look at what its like for children to live in Southern Sudan. What do you think it is like to go to school in Southern Sudan? Do you think it is the same as your school in Minnesota? Look at the photo/video link to the left. If your computer is capable, you can watch a short video of your friends singing and practicing their alphabet at a Mission School in Southern Sudan. Simply clicking on the photo to the left. Many children of Sudan live in small grass houses shaped like igloos. Can you find the children's house in the picture above? Where do the children get water from for drinking, cooking, bathing, and washing? These children must carry water long distances from rivers and wells. It is hard work carrying water every day. When the children get sick, they may just have to stay at home and hope they will get better on their own. When they are really sick, then they will walk to the Catholic mission's clinic for medicine to help. The mission is also a long walk from their home. There are few schools in Sudan. Most children have to stay home. The girls have to baby-sit for their younger brothers and sisters. The boys must watch and walk around with their family's goats and young cows all day long. What do you think the children eat? For breakfast the children drink only milk or porridge. For lunch and supper, they eat Atap (a doughy food made from corn flour that looks like mashed potatoes). If the children are lucky, they might get a few beans to eat as well. If they are really lucky, they might get roasted meat once a week. These children don't have any refrigerators like you do. They store their food in very small grass silos or bins. These silos or bins sit high in the air on big tables made out of sticks. This prevents animals from eating all the children's food. How would you like to live with and like these children in Sudan? Maybe today you could say a prayer. Pray for your friends in Sudan or do something nice for someone else today... Meet Bishop Paride Taban of Diocese of Torit, Southern Sudan.

Bishop Taban celebrated the Eucharist with the Fergus Falls Catholic Primary School. He also visited and gave presentations with the Religious Education Classes at Urbank Parish. In March of 2002, Bishop John Kinney (of the Diocese of St. Cloud) and Fr. William Vos (Mission Office Director) visited Bishop Taban in his diocese in Southern Sudan.
